Humpback Morning

Finally back out on the water after a busy summer, I headed out on the morning trip to start the day off. We started off the day with some Harbor Seals on some rocks, and among them was even a cute little pup! We then made a quick break out south of the islands straight towards Canada continuing west toward Race Rocks. We were almost there when we got wind of a Humpback nearby and we veered off to intercept it. Arriving on scene we found ourselves in the vicinity of a couple of Humpbacks and we picked our whale to hang out with. It turns out we picked the right whale, we got a lot of surface time, a few good flukes for IDs and a very unexpected breach! Though only a single breach so getting a photo would have been a miracle and no miracles today… Through the fluke shots I was able to ID this whale as BCX0519 aka Double Stich. As soon as we said goodbye to Double Stich we went over and checked on another Humpback from the area who had moved in our direction. Our new friend did not put on nearly the show Double Stich had and was feeling very shy not showing off their fluke. I was able to get a tiny corner photo of the fluke but it was not enough for me to ID off of, thankfully though Happy Whale was able to identify our shy friend as BCZ0414 aka Zephyr. We broke off from Zephyr and headed back home stopping by a bouy to watch a few Stellar Sea Lions who were sunning. A great trip though maybe next time I will finally make it all the way west to Race Rocks, maybe next time…
