Otterly Owesome Trip

Headed out for round two for the day we made a beeline west again to Canada, but as with any whale trip every time is different. While we headed to nearly the same area we found ourselves in this morning and we found ourselves another Humpback Whale this was a different whale, BCX0870 aka Scoop! Scoop was a particularly tricky ID to make as she did not provide a good angle on her fluke and her primary marking, a hole in her fluke, wasn’t visible. Her fluke is fairly clean so it was not overly helpful she does have a “scoop” on the trailing edge of her dorsal but not uncommon enough to ID off just that. Luckily though I noticed when looking at a prefluking photo showing the top of her tail that there was water going through her tail indicating the hole we had wanted to see to confirm the ID. As we made our way back home we stopped by Bird Rock that has recently become home to a local Sea Otter and sure enough they were home having some dinner! Got to watch them go to town on some shellfish and try prying into it with their teeth and do some smashing actions against a rock or another shell. Any trip with an Otter is a good trip and a great way to wrap up a successful day on the water!
